A tectonic smorgasbordThe Ionian zone of Northwest Greece and Albania is a world class encapsulation of so many principles of modern stratigraphy and tectonics. The complex tectonics of the area involve a rugged evaporite soled fold and thrust belt, so seismic acquisition is limited in its ability to resolve deep structure. This means that structural geology, geochemistry, and other non-seismic exploration techniques are imperatives in the area. The interaction with the Aegean and Hellenic subduction zone means the crust in this region of the world is regionally rotating faster than anywhere else we know of. The dynamics of tectonics here are superlative in every respect.
PAETORO has a long standing interest in this region, and is working to collate and analyse existing data, and to deploy the learnings this region offers elsewhere See also... |
